Why do people choose alternative approaches?
Medical choices are very personal. In some ways they are akin to religion and politics in that people feel very strongly about them. Some people are outspoken and some are very private about their treatment decisions. Medical choices for children can be even harder as parents struggle with the idea that the choices they make now will have long lasting consequences. The reasons that people may choose an alternative approach to treatment are many and varied.
Some choose CAM as a first approach to treating bipolar disorder with the belief that it is more natural and healthy. They may hope that using this intervention first may prevent or delay the need for traditional medical approaches. For some who are already involved in alternative treatment for other health issues, it may seem a normal extension of their current choices. Others choose this approach after being sorely disappointed in traditional treatments, feeling that their needs have been failed by traditional medicine. This group arrives at their decision after having poor medical experiences and numerous failed treatments. They are hopeful that alternatives will provide something better. Still others are looking for the best possible outcome and wish to explore all potential possibilities including treatment options that are non-conventional. Many parents want to look at all options and mix and match treatment approaches.
Whether parents choose totally traditional approaches or a CAM approach for their child, they all want the same outcome. Each is looking for improved health, better functioning and stability for their child.
